A Girl’s Guide To A Great Spa Experience

1. The Massage

The Treatment:
The Swedish Massage is probably one of the most popular and familiar types of massage treatments available. It’s what most people think of as the “traditional massage.” The technique employs the use of long, flowing strokes to ease sore muscles, relieve tension, and offer a most relaxing experience. Focus is mainly on the back, neck, and shoulders.

Spa Etiquette:
Receiving a massage is very personal and can sometimes make you feel uneasy. To truly derive all the benefits and pleasures of a massage, follow these few simple rules: Arrive early to have time to unwind before your service; take advantage of the steam, shower, or whirlpool facility to warm up your muscles beforehand; undress to your comfort level; tell your therapist which areas of your body are injured or are in most need of attention; mention any health conditions (including if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding); and let your therapist know immediately if you feel discomfort at any time.
It is typical to tip 15-20% or more for a massage.

What To Expect:
You will be provided with a robe and slippers and taken to a waiting area complete with fruit and beverages. Your therapist will come for you and take you to your room, already set with dim lighting and relaxing music. You will be left alone to undress and to slip under the sheet face down. (At one point, you will be asked to turn onto your back so your therapist may massage your face, neck, and shoulders.) From that moment on, you are in the hands of your therapist. Close your eyes, enjoy the scented oils, and embrace one of life’s best luxuries.

2. The Pedicure
The Treatment:
The Spa Pedicure is the most basic of pedicures for your feet. It includes cutting, shaping, and polishing the nails; massaging the heels and lower legs; and smoothing the soles of your feet.

Spa Etiquette:
While the facility usually provides you with disposable flip-flops, it’s always best to bring a pair of open-toed shoes. Allow a full hour for your pedicure. You may be done in less time, but you’ll want to make sure your nails are completely dry before leaving. It is typical to tip 15-20% or more for a pedicure.

What To Expect:
You will pick your favorite shade of polish before being seated in a massaging spa chair. The pedicurist will remove any old polish and soak your feet in warm, vibrating water. She will then cut and shape your nails, trim your cuticles, remove any dead skin, and massage your feet and legs with a soothing lotion. New polish is applied, and you will be taken to a waiting area with a drying fan for your feet. Kick back with a magazine, relax, and let your nails dry before you’re off to pound the pavement again.

3. The Rejuvenator

The Treatment:
Microdermabrasion is a skin-rejuvenating treatment for sun-damaged or acne-prone skin. It’s also great for diminishing fine lines and wrinkles.

Spa Etiquette:
With microdermabrasion, it’s best to consult with the esthetician prior to your treatment. Some skin types require more than one treatment for maximum results. Since the procedure may leave you with mild swelling and/or redness, it’s best to schedule it when you don’t have an important meeting or social gathering. It is typical to tip 15-20% or more for a facial.

What To Expect:
You will be asked to lie face up on a table while the esthetician uses a specialized tool to remove/break up the uppermost layer of your skin. She will start with circular motions across the face, placing emphasis on problem areas. Expect some discomfort, similar to the feeling of sandpaper scraping your face. As the dead skin cells are removed, the body will rush to replace them with new and healthy ones. The cleansing feeling will soon follow and make whatever pain you experienced all worth it. Depending on your skin, you may notice a little swelling and redness after the procedure. Since microdermabrasion temporarily removes some moisture from the skin, a hydrating facial should follow leaving you and your skin feeling totally rejuvenated. [Sb]
